advantages of working with a realtor?

I've heard that you need to have a Realtor on your team to bring you deals that surface on the MLS.

Do they serve any other purpose then that?

There are lots of advantages, but you hav to work with the right realtor.

You should work with someone that works with investors, not just says they do. You can get referrals from your local REI Club.
